The early Round of 16 matches in this season’s Champions League produced poor returns for English clubs with both Spurs and Liverpool suffering 1-0 defeats. This week, it’s the turn of Chelsea and Manchester City to step in and try to fly the flag for the Premier League.

First up we have Chelsea who host Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in what will be another tough 90 minutes for an English side. Can Frank Lampard’s Blues upset the odds and take an advantage into the second leg or will Tuesday night’s game go with the form book?

Match Odds

Bayern Munich are firm favourites to win on the night with odds on prices right across the board. The best odds that we can currently find are the 13/15 from SportNation and RedZone so the bookies are clearly expecting a comfortable evening for the Germans. Next up is the draw at a top price of 16/5 with VBet while a win for Chelsea comes in at a best of 7/2 with Unibet.

Those are the numbers for Tuesday’s game only but if you want to take the second leg into account, you could head to the separate To Qualify market. Here, Bayern Munich shorten considerably to best odds of 1/4 with Coral and Ladbrokes while the top price on Chelsea making it to the quarter finals is the 4/1 from SportingBet.

It’s a tough ask for Chelsea to come through but before we make our conclusions on Tuesday’s match, we’ll take a look at the players who can decide its destiny.

Individual Goal Scorers

Polish international striker Robert Lewandowski has been on fire this season and will go into this game with 38 goals from 32 games across all competitions. That tally includes 10 in five UCL matches and it’s no surprise to see him at the top of the first goalscorer betting. Lewandowksi can be claimed at best odds of 3/1 with Unibet and 888Sport while his teammate Serge Gnabry is on offer at 24/5 with the same two bookmakers.

Chelsea welcomed back Tammy Abraham from injury in their weekend win over Spurs and the England international is quoted at best odds of 13/2 while the evergreen Thomas Muller is just behind at a top price of 15/2 – both with 888Sport and Unibet. Other options in this first goalscorer market include Philippe Coutinho at that same best of 15/2 with BetFred and Betway while Olivier Giroud, who opened the scoring in that win over Tottenham, will tempt many at a top price of 8/1 with Unibet and 888Sport.

There are some interesting prices in this section and it’s time to make a first, confirmed tip. Robert Lewandowski is on a hot streak as we’ve seen but we feel that the value could lie further down. Thomas Muller has been subdued by his high standards with nine in 32 this season so the man we’ll turn to is Philippe Coutinho. Seven goals in 28 games is a healthy enough return for a midfielder and that ratio of one in four has us looking at Coutinho for an anytime goal at best odds of 12/5 with Ladbrokes and SportingBet.

Other Side Bets

If we’re going to be looking at some goals-related markets, we should firstly take a quick look at the form guide. Bayern have a healthy return of 14 goals from their last five matches but they did draw a blank in a 0-0 draw against title rivals RB Leipzig.

Over the same five-game period, Chelsea have scored just eight times and like their opponents, they have been shut out in just one match. Those numbers do suggest that Both Teams to Score could be likely and that’s available for Tuesday’s match at best industry odds of 6/10 with William Hill and Betway.

If that figure looks a little short then we could switch to the Overs and Unders market. Over 2.5 goals will look to be a safe bet at a top price of 8/13 with VBet but maybe this is a time to be braver and claim Over 3.5 at a far more generous best of 31/20 with Unibet and 888Sport.

There could certainly be goals but we don’t think the result is as clear cut as the bookies think. Chelsea have been in patchy form but with home advantage on a noisy European night. A high scoring draw could be the outcome and, in the Correct Score betting, a 2-2 result at best odds of 12/1 with SportingBet is the one that tempts us.

We’re not underestimating Chelsea on Tuesday and our tips point towards a positive evening for the Blues. Remember, all of these bets are for the first leg only.

Best Bets:

  • The Draw at 16/5 with VBet
  • Philippe Coutinho to score anytime at 12/5 with Ladbrokes
  • Over 3.5 Goals at 31/20 with Unibet
