It’s been well-documented for some time that Mesut Ozil is unsettled at Arsenal and the German international may even make a move away from the club. Under former manager Arsene Wenger, the midfielder found it hard to command a place in 2017/18 but it did seem that new boss Unai Emery may include him as part of his long term plans.

With half of the new campaign gone however, the player is still struggling to become a regular starter at the Emirates and an Ozil transfer now seems inevitable. The obvious question is – where will he go?

If we look at Mesut Ozil transfer news from around the newspapers from the last few weeks, one of the front runners might have been Manchester United. There is certainly a precedent between the two clubs with Alexis Sanchez moving from the Emirates to Old Trafford in January 2019 and Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving the other way but the sacking of Jose Mourinho seems to have cooled those rumours.

In fact, when we look at the latest betting, we find that United are way down the list and it’s Inter Milan who are listed as favourites to secure a Mesut Ozil transfer.

The Favourites

The German is as short as 5/2 to join Inter while the best odds for this option currently stand at 10/1 with Coral. Rivals AC Milan are next on the list at 11/1 with 888Sport and Unibet so the bookies can see an Ozil transfer to one of the dressing rooms at the San Siro this month.

We’ve seen that trend for Arsenal to sell to Premier League teams and the next club in the frame are Manchester City at a top price of 14/1 with Unibet and 888Sport. City would not seem to have an immediate need in Ozil’s area of the pitch but that hasn’t stopped the mega-rich club from picking up available talent in the past.

Just behind their great rivals are Manchester United who, have now drifted to 16/1 with William Hill. The installation of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have had a bearing in the drift: The Norwegian is in temporary charge of the Old Trafford club so it may mean that United’s transfer policy is on hiatus until such time as a permanent new manager is appointed.

Outside Options

There are no rank outsiders and at present, the longest priced clubs are listed at 33/1 to seal a Mesut Ozil transfer. There could be some interest in the top industry price of 22/1 from both 888Sport and Unibet on the player returning to former side Bayern Munich while the same two bookmakers have odds of 30/1 on a switch to Juventus.

Those are the most likely candidates so where will Mesut Ozil be when the transfer window closes?

Verdict

It’s possible that Mesut Ozil will be retained unless the Gunners bring in any midfield reinforcements. In that case, the markets will reopen again and offer options for summer window betting but it’s worth looking at possible destinations right now.

There is also the fact that the player will turn 31 in 2019 so, while he has more years left at the top, the next contract will be his last big deal in football and clubs may want an early Mesut Ozil transfer rather than waiting until the end of the season.

You can take odds of 1/10 from either Unibet or 888Sport on the player to stay at Arsenal but there is little value in that and there are reasons to hint at an Ozil transfer in this current window. He’s consistently left out of the big Premier League games and it seems almost certain that he doesn’t form any part of Unai Emery’s long term plans. Any Mesut Ozil transfer news backs that up and while we can’t always trust the gossip columns, they all hint at a January switch.

Arsenal have a recent history of selling players to other Premier League clubs and, unlike other teams, they don’t seem to mind if that club is a main rival. We saw that trend with Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud in 2018 so it would be no huge surprise if we saw Mesut Ozil transfer to one of the big Premier League teams.

Manchester United may well come back into the frame once the situation with their manager settles down.

A more plausible switch could certainly take place in Italy where either Milan club would be happy to take such a creative player. There is an interesting additional thread here with talk of Gonzalo Higuain leaving AC Milan and heading to Chelsea who are desperate for a striker.

Although Ozil would not be a like for like replacement, he has the capacity to add useful goals from midfield and would be able to unlock defences in what is a defensive league.

Overall, the Manchester United switch interests us but it’s likely to take place in the summer. Arsenal will not want to see too many defenders leave the club while United’s temporary managerial situation also slows this down.

We will bring you any additional Mesut Ozil transfer news as it lands but for now, the following tips seem the most likely in regards to the German international’s future. Feel free to overlook the 1/10 price as it’s prohibitively short but it’s the most likely scenario in our opinion right now.

Best Bets:

  • Mesut Ozil to stay at Arsenal in January 2019 at 1/10 with 888Sport
  • Ozil transfer to Manchester United as next permanent club – when available
